Building A Front Porch Oasis Part 2: Details

In our previous post we showed how we began clearing out the area and the overall structure of the front porch. Let’s move on to some more detail!

The porch ceiling is tongue and grove pine, which was delivered by Reisterstown with the trusses and beams. We debated on stain for a while, before deciding to go with the natural finish and 4 coats of clear semi-gloss finish using Helmsman indoor/outdoor Spar Urethane to protect it from sunlight, moisture, and temperature changes. A carpenter bee was already getting to work digging a hole -- so hopefully the urethane deters him and his buddies too!

All the pine 6x6 posts were covered with PVC material, which is a little more expensive, but easy to work with and impervious to moisture and pests. It can be sanded and painted just like wood, and should easily last 30-40+ years. We went with a simple white paint (Everest by Sherwin Williams) on the lumber to make the porch stand out. Some of the PVC didn’t even need to be painted!

This is just the beginning look of our newest project! Next we get going on the landscaping. Watch us transform this front porch into the perfect oasis!
